Stewardship Sites
In 1992, CCWC organized volunteers to choose favorite areas in the Castle Wilderness to visit each year, and report on the area's state of ecological health. So, for over 15 years, about 20 people per year in about 26 watersheds have taken note of: species observed, state of erosion, vehicle impacts, grazing impacts, litter, weeds, and problem situations such as loss of whitebark pines.
Stewards have the opportunity to learn new skills, such as how to evaluate the state of health of riparian areas, weed identification, bear and cougar aware, and introduction to bioengineering, among others.
In recent years, CCWC was supported by the Water Stewardship Grants, Yellowstone to Yukon, Alberta Ecotrust, the Lethbridge Community Foundation, World Wildlife Fund, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Alberta Conservation Association and Mountain Equipment Co-op to enhance the Stewardship program and improve the Website in order to more widely share the information the Stewards have gathered.
The stewardship map on this site will allow you to check the area you want to study, and see what people have learned and recorded. CCWC also hopes you will submit your own observations. Do that by email to , titling your email "stewardship information", identifying the area you observed, listing the observations you made, and letting us know if you are willing to be contacted by people seeking more information.
Thanks for your help!
